Quran

Qurʾān, Qur'an, Quran, Quraan, Koran, Coran

There are several opinions about the etymology of the word “Qurān” or “Qurʾān”. Some argues that it is derived from qara’a, which means “to read”. This will render the verbal noun Quran as “the reading”. Others have suggested that Quran was from the root qarana which means “to combine” or “to associate”. Thus the Quran was so named because it is formed from the combination of surahs (sections, often called chapters). Even others suggested that the word Quran, just like Tawrat (Tawrah or Taurat: that is the Quranic word for the Torah) and Injil (the Quranic word for the Gospel of Jesus), was a proper noun that was not derived from any word, and denoted the speech of God. Even others argued that the Quran was derived from the word qara’in meaning “to resemble”; it is called so, because its verses resemble one another in eloqouence.
According to some of these definitions, Qurʾān should be pronounced as Qurān, that is, without the hamza (Arabic letter that represents a glottal stop, normally transliterated as a simple apostrophe / ’ / or modifier letter right half ring / ʾ /).
In the Quran itself, the word Qurʾān (i.e. with the hamza) refers to the revelation of God in the broad sense and is not always restricted to mean a book – this only as a revelation from God to Prophet Muhammad.
The name Quran is mentioned 58 times in the Quran and is the most common name for this Scripture, both in hadith-literature (plural: hadith, hadiths, or ahadith: a saying, act or tacit approval ascribed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad and later written down) and conventional speech among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
